The last couple of years I’ve received two electric shavers as gifts. One was the Norelco 1150 and the other a Remington R7130. Neither did a bang up job. To make a long story short, they both wound up in the donation bin. I have to honestly say that with a thick growth, I am not a big fan of souped up shavers. Still, I keep hoping. I would love nothing more then to find a shaver that did the job. When given the opportunity to take the 1290X/40 for a test drive, I thought maybe this would be the one. After a month’s use, these are my thoughts.
Out of the box, the Philips Norelco 1290X/40 looks quite impressive. It comes with a charging station, power cord, brush, pouch, instructions, and a plastic head cap. Unlike the old plug and go corded shavers, users really need to sit down and read the instructions. Like my older Norelco 1150 it has a great ergonomic feel. Weight balance is above average from the previous models that I’ve owned. After charging up for a little over an hour, it was time for the big test.
First off and unlike my older 1150, the Multi Function LED Display is quite detailed. It covers all the bases including on & off switch, power level, cleaning indicator, clogged head indicator, replacement indicator and a travel lock feature. I like the fact that I can dry or wet shave with this series of shavers. After trying both, I noticed I was getting a closer shave in the dry mode. I like the trimmer. The overall flexibility in the head chassis is a big selling point for me.
Even in wet mode, clean up is a breeze. I put the shaver under hot water for about 30 seconds. The heads should be opened one by one until clean. Each chamber of the unit has to be cleaned individually. Its a good idea to shake off the excess water and keep the heads open and let them air dry. The company also sells a cleaner/lubricant for their shaver systems. Its called Jet Clean. I found it rather pricey for a 10oz bottle. I’m doing just fine with hot water, alcohol and a drop of mineral oil.
Its always a good idea to clean the unit after each use. Depending on the source, replacement heads can cost upwards to one half of the price of a new shaver. If you have a light growth the heads will probably go two years or more without replacement. If you’re like me and have a heavy beard its a given that the heads will barely make it through a year.
When the juice runs low the shaver has to be placed in the stand to recharge. Unlike older models this unit has to be unplugged when it reaches a full sixty minute charge. Too many overcharges and its the recycle bin for the battery. When the lithium ion battery does die out, its a small task to remove the battery from the shaver. Keep in mind that the battery is soldered into the contact panel.
Battery replacement may be available at the limited number of third party repair shops. Like most companies now, the manufacturer no longer makes repairs or replaces batteries. Philips Norelco does tag their high end models with a two year warranty. If there is a problem within the first two years, the company will send a replacement model. A toll free (800-243-3050) customer support number is listed on page 32 of the owners manual.
After a months use of the Philips Norelco 1290X/40, I have to say that the manufacturer is heading in the right direction with this lineup of products. For light or medium growth, this model may be the one for you. It has all the bells and whistles. For me personally, I like the features and the feel of the 1290X/40. Unfortunately that’s where it ends.
For my heavy growth its a tool that doesn’t get it done for me. I like the feel of a clean close shave. Shaving two to three times a day with this model just doesn’t cut it. Still, this is a good product for the right growth. Just not mine.

Before trying this shaver, I had a lower-end Norelco, and I can honestly say that this shaver is worlds better.
Some features like the LED “minutes remaining” indicator and ergonomic feel are nice, but what I really cared about is shaving performance. In that regard, the SensoTouch 3D comes out a big winner over my lowly aging razor.
With my previous razor, it had a tendency to yank on facial hair as it cut when I got too scruffy (and it did so even when the razor was new). My old razor also didn’t do a particularly good job cutting hairs on my neck, which is a bit more contoured than my face. In fact, I used to have to use the sideburn trimmer for most of my neck since the rotary heads just wouldn’t cut it, so to speak!
The SensoTouch 3D does a much better job, however, and it does so at about twice the speed! For the SensoTouch’s first test, I hadn’t shaved in about 3 days and I was pleased to find that it cut my longer facial hair without any yanking to speak of! Not only that, but it cut the hair on my neck and even around my adam’s apple with minimal skin stretching.
Overall I’m very impressed, and am able to shave for shorter time with better results. The product claims are true!
The drawbacks are price of replacement heads, the sideburn trimmer is fairly narrow for my liking, and the charger seems to emit a high-pitch squeal when I’ve freshly rinsed the shaver before placing it on its base.
These are all minor issues, however, and I’d highly recommend the SensoTouch 3D if you have the budget for this an outstanding razor.
